Once a student reaches the level of Black Belt and has demonstrated the maturity and responsibility to handle a real sword, they will learn how to use a real sword called a Jingum to cut newspaper, straw mats, fruit and bamboo.

Haidong Gumdo can trace it’s roots back more than 2,000 years to the Kokuryo Kingdom (AD 331). There Master Sul-Bong established a Dojang (school) by Sam-Ji Lake in the Baekdoo Mountains and taught his students a sword Martial Art based on the ideas of patriotism, filial piety, respecting their elders and righteousness. Among them, the outstanding ones were called Samurang and they were always at the front line of the battle against injustice.
Since that time the techniques of Haidong Gumdo were passed down through the generations in secrecy in the mountains of Korea. In 1961 Master Jang Baek San taught Haidong Gumdo to Grandmaster Jeong Ho Kim. Grandmaster Jeong Ho Kim took the original techniques he learned and developed it into a system of swordsmanship that anyone of any age could learn.
On July 24, 1982 he established the first public Haidong Gumdo Dojang (school) in Ahn-Yang City, Korea. On April 10th, 1984, he founded the Korean Haidong Gumdo Federation in the Seocho district of Seoul and established the World Haidong Gumdo Federation on November 25, 1996. On July 23, 2002, the 1st Haidong Gumdo World Championships was held in Yong Pyung stadium in Gangwon Province and is held once every two years.
