What Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

nick guard
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling Martial Art based solely on leverage and technique. It allows the practitioner to defeat an opponent of greater size and strength by using various takedowns, pins and submission holds. The techniques are simple, effective and fun to learn.

Why You Should Learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

None of us ever expect to be physically assaulted, however we live in a dangerous world, where anything can and does happen. Most people want the security of knowing how to to defend themselves but are not familiar with the realities of self-defense and the fact that 95% of all real attacks end up in a clinch or on the ground. They think it is like the movies where you can do one punch or kick and it’s over. The truth is…it’s not! By learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu you will develop the tools and confidence necessary to defend yourself and your loved ones.

What You Will Learn?

In our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Fundamentals Program you will learn how to defend and escape the most common situations you could end up in, in a self-defense situation (both standing and on the ground). As you improve, you will then learn how to go on the attack by using a variety of submission holds that can be used to subdue an opponent without having to hurt them or yourself.

History of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

In 1914, Jiu-Jitsu/Judo Champion Mitsuyo Maeda was sent to Brazil from Japan to help establish a Japanese Colony. There he met Gastao Gracie, a Brazilian scholar and politician of Scottish decent, who assisted in the formation of the colony. To show his gratitude, Maeda taught the Art of Jiu-Jitsu to Gastao’s son, Carlos Gracie. Carlos taught Jiu-Jitsu to his brothers; Oswaldo, Gastao, Jorge and Helio.

In 1925 the original “Gracie Brothers” opened the first Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Botafogo, a district of Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. Carlos and his brothers, particularly Helio, refined the original art by creating new techniques and discarding less efficient ones. Since that time the Gracies have established Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as the most advanced grappling martial art and the most effective self-defense system.

In, an effort to spread the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and to prove the effectiveness of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the Gracie Family issued what is now known as the “Gracie Challenge”. They would take on any opponent, of any style and of any size to prove that effectiveness of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

In 1992, Rorion Gracie with his then partner Art Davie started the UFC. The reason was simple, to prove to the whole world that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was the most effective overall single Martial Art and in order to prove it, he chose one of his youngest and skinniest brothers Royce Gracie to prove it.

Royce Gracie shocked the Martial Arts world by beating opponents who were stronger than him and outweighed him by more than 50 pounds with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. His ability to win against such odds was a testament to the effectiveness of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Royce Gracie proved the validity of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as a martial art and a necessary part of any “Real” self-defense system.

Since that time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has grown in popularity worldwide because of it’s effectiveness in a clinch or on the ground and the fact that any one of any age can learn it and because it is so much fun to learn. One thing most people don’t know about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is even though it is such an effective grappling martial art, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu also has one of the simplest and easy to learn systems of self defense against the most common threats that can happen in a stand up self defense situation.
